I took out the old battery yesterday, drove to Costco and got a new 24F for $84.99. I am hands-down buying my battery at Costco. There is no debating, no checking for whether they agree it is a bad battery. But basically if, down the road, you come in with a "bad battery" they just look at you, take your receipt (or maybe even just look at the date on the battery), and give you a new one either for free or for the prorated price as the case may be. The guy also said on the phone that basically they don't test batteries at all like Autozone does, which is bad because you can't get a load test today. Given that a 24F has 130 mins reserve and is the "correct" battery, I'm more than happy to pay the extra 10 bucks because I think Group 35s are only 100 mins reserve capacity, so 24F is 30% "bigger" than 35s.ģ yrs free replacement and 100 months total prorated. They also have Group 35 batteries for 74.95. ![]() If I'm driving in Northern Cali and my car doesn't start, I'll know who to call!īTW for those who are following along.I called two local Costco's here in Chicago and both are stocking 24F batteries for 84.95 (without the core charge). If they fail in roughly the same time as the normal batteries, then no.since they don't really DO anything different than a normal battery (they both provide electricity). Of course if you are the type who likes "platinum" versus "silver" or "gold" on the marketing terms then I don't see any downside to getting it, but you're just paying a lot more for the same functionality.Ĭlick to expand.Yes I agree that if indeed the AGM batteries have a longer life to warrant the price difference, then it's a "good buy". You don't need to mount it upside down and you don't care if it vents a little gas here and there since it is outdoors by definition. So unless it is conclusively proven that these AGM batteries will last 2X longer than a normal battery, I'm not seeing the value of paying nearly $200 for one when you can get normal batteries for $100 or less. All the "normal" batteries in 24F list 130 minutes. I looked quickly at the Odyssey website and typed in Honda Odyssey, and it listed their version of the 24F battery as having 135 minutes reserve capacity. They are expensive as H&ll though, and for a car I'm personally not convinced of the value of paying up for an AGM battery. AGM batteries are also used in boats a lot, since they can be mounted sideways, upside down, whatever. I have AGM batteries for my basement sump pump since they are completely sealed and don't gas Hydrogen and sulfuric acid. It appears that many of the Autozones, Sears etc are now selling "Platinum" versions that are probably made by the Odyssey company. The ODYSSEYs are also AGM batteries, but not spiral wound. ![]() The OPTIMAs are the "spiral wound AGM" batteries that have a big following. Click to expand. No I think he's referring to both.
